Toll roads in Europe
Those setting off on a road trip should know that, in European countries, the road tax is charged either for a period of time (vignette) or for the distance traveled. In addition, there are special extra charges for tunnels, bridges, ferries, etc.
The vignette can be purchased at certain fuel stations and special kiosks (located near the border), both in the respective country and in neighboring ones. In Hungary and Romania, the so-called e-vignette is in use. Since 2017, it has also been possible to purchase the e-vignette in the Republic of Moldova.
We advise you to buy the vignettes directly in the countries where they are valid and in their national currency. This way, you will avoid commissions and losses from currency conversion.
The map below shows, in blue, the countries where motorways are paid for the distance traveled; in red - you need to buy a vignette; in green - there is no charge.
