In all European countries there are speed limits within built-up areas, outside them, and on motorways. In some countries there is also a speed limit for the "Road for motor vehicles" category.
In European countries there is no acceptable margin for exceeding the legal speed limit. This means you will be penalized even for exceeding the maximum allowed speed by 1 km/h. And for a second violation, you will pay a fine several times higher than the initial one.
In countries such as Austria, Albania, Bulgaria, Denmark, Lithuania and Estonia, exceeding certain expressly established speed limits may result in the penalty of losing the right to drive motor vehicles. There are also cases where violations related to exceeding the maximum allowed speed are examined in court.
In some countries, the amount of the fine applied may be influenced, besides the driving speed, by other factors as well. For example, in Finland, when exceeding the maximum allowed speed by 20 km/h, the amount of the fine is calculated based on your income, as well as the number of minors in your family. Therefore, we recommend that, before setting off on a trip, you thoroughly inform yourself about the legislation of the country you plan to visit.
